FAQ

Who are Recipo?

Recipo provides simple, safe and sustainable compliance for the electronics industry across the Nordic region – combining regulatory expertise and business insight with smart and cost-effective solutions and more than 15+ years of experience.

What is producer responsibility?

Producer responsibility means that companies placing certain types of products on the market — such as electronics, batteries, packaging and similar — are also responsible for ensuring that these products are collected and recycled in an environmentally sound way.

It’s not only about recycling, but also about designing products, informing consumers, and organizing systems that reduce environmental impact throughout a product’s entire life cycle.

Which Products have Producer Responsibility?

Today there are 5 categories with producer responsibility in Denmark:

  • Electronics
  • Batteries
  • Vehicles
  • Single-use plastics
  • Packaging

Today there are ten categories of producer responsibility in Norway:

  • Packaging
  • Waste from electrical and electronic equipment
  • Batteries
  • Discarded cars and car tires
  • Discarded recreational boats
  • Construction waste
  • Hazardous waste
  • Rubber granules from artificial turf fields
  • Food waste and other wet organic waste
  • Waste oil

There are currently eight categories that have producer responsibility in Sweden:

  • Packaging
  • Plastic products (e.g. balloons, disposable packaging, fishing gear)
  • Electrical equipment
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Cars
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Radioactive products and orphan radiation sources

What are a company’s obligations?

If your company is covered by producer responsibility, you are required to:

    • Connect to a nationally approved collection system, such as Recipo, which helps you meet the legal requirements.
    • Register with the national authority and report relevant data about production, import, and sales.
    • For physical retailers: comply with the one-to-one rule — smaller stores must accept the return of a similar type of product when selling a new one, and larger stores (over 400 m²) must often also accept used items without a purchase.
    • For batteries: local authorities must provide appropriate collection points, and producers or importers must report directly through the national system.

Why is producer responsibility necessary?

In Europe, we follow the principle that the polluter pays. Producer responsibility encourages companies to create products that are free of environmentally harmful substances, reusable, and more resource efficient.

Simultaneously, producer responsibility raises awareness among producers and consumers about recycling of electronics and batteries. Ultimately, leading to less waste, safer handling of hazardous materials, and a reduction in emissions.
